Ready to go.
This juvenile Greater Spotted Woodpecker should be off at any minute, the adults were calling nearby and a sibling was out there too. The youngsters lose the red colouring on their heads when they become adult.
This morning one of the adults attempted to get into the Blue Tit nest box again. It had already started to enlarge the entrance hole and as this is the box we have the 'bird cam' in, we wrapped chicken wire around the box. The second attempt was to drill a hole near the base.
Eight of the ten Blue Tit chicks hatched two days ago and both parents are frantically feeding them with juicy caterpillars from the nearby oak trees. As we put the nestbox up we feel responsible if it's not strong enough, the woodpeckers have to eat too but they have the rest of the wood to forage in.
