Canon and Cannon
By the canons of history-telling and inclusiveness the new "modern" history gallery at the museum is a great success. We were there for a meeting today and, hopefully, our report will be signed off within a week or so. Whilst at the museum we took a walk around some of the other galleries. This cannon and its ammunition are from the Galleass Girona, which was wrecked in a storm near the Giant's Causeway on the night of 26 October 1588. Sadly, only nine of the 1300 people on board survived. Three hundred and eighty eight years later a team of Belgian divers brought up many of the treasures that she was carrying, including this cannon. The site is now designated and protected.
