Mud topped dry stone wall

On top of Cleeve Common by the aerials is a line of new mud topped drystone walling. The mud on the top is a mixture of limestone sediment and animal dung. This is an old tradition and it encourages moss growth. The experiment is hoping to encourage some rare types of moss and the wall has been divided into sections and different combinations of animal dung - horse, sheep and cattle. In the age of horse and cart the mixture of sediment and animal dung was used to fill potholes in the cart tracks.
