Brown Jellyfish (Phyllorhiza punctata)

You would think that such a beautiful jellyfish should have a much more "exotic" name than "brown Jellyfish"!
I learnt to swim with these beauties - it was a little intimidating as they have a reputation for a little sting, although not really painful or dangerous!
However, when you are 6 years old and the surface of the water is covered in these, it's a little off putting :)
In late summer and early autumn when the river has a higher salinity due to lack of rain, these jellies multiply rapidly.  They can grow to a width of 50cms!
