Stourbridge Common

Once known as Steer Bridge, a bridge for oxen. This is part of the Fen Rivers Way which is a footpath that follows the rivers Cam and Ouse from Cambridge to King's Lynn. The medievel Stourbridge fair was sited here, and at it's peak, the largest in Europe. 1199 King John granted the Leper Chapel (still standing) a dispensation to hold a 3 day fair to raise money for the lepers. The first fair was held here in 1211, the last one in 1933. It has been revived in a small way by Friends Of The Leper Chapel. It is a popular place for walkers, joggers, cyclists and children who come to feed the swans. Also only 10 mins walk away for me, so I will probably be in the area quite often.
