Great Blue Mountains Walking Trail

For the past few months we have watched with great interest a group of workers who have been constructing what seemed to be a fairly substantial track between Katoomba and Medlow Bath.  

In recent days we had come to the conclusion that they had been developing a walking/cycling path as it was not wide enough to take a car.

This morning as we drove into Katoomba I saw three fellows erecting this sign just outside the Hydro Majestic Hotel so on our way home I stopped to take a blip.  

On further research I found a paper submitted to the Blue Mountains City Council in 2010 and here is an excerpt.


This feasibility assessment report on the upgrade and development of the Great Blue Mountains Trail: Upper Mountains Component (GBMTUMC) is part two of a two part report into determining the feasibility of establishing a regional level cycling and walking trail from Leura Mall through Katoomba, Medlow Bath, Blackheath, Mountain Victoria to Mount York.
The GBMTUMC will provide a variety of pedestrian and cyclist opportunities to travel through the scenic natural areas and heritage townships of the Blue Mountains. It will be accessible from townships and railway stations across the City. The trail will link with recreational trails along the way including Six Foot Track, Narrowneck, Porters Pass, and major tourist attractions such as Echo Point and Scenic World in Katoomba, Govetts Leap and Evans Lookout in Blackheath, the Mt York historic roads precinct and Mt Victoria Museum.
The GBMTUMC will offer a diverse range of benefits to the local community and the environment including social, health, physical fitness, environmental, cultural preservation and economic. 


Well I know we've been away from the mountains, but honestly we had no idea that this had been agreed to and we are delighted.  What a wonderful idea and how great for the locals as well as tourists who visit the Blue Mountains.  We can't wait to try it.
