St. George's West

This is the west elevation of the 4 stage tower of the former St George's West church in the west end of Edinburgh. It was originally known as Free St George's Church and was built after the 'disruption', a schism within the Church of Scotland which led to the establishment of the Free Church of Scotland. There was a theological disagreement. The church was built 1866-69. A 56metre campanile based on St Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, was added in 1879-81. This is the structure that appears in my picture.

Not used as a church any more (I don't think) St George's is now more of a community centre and is very close to my office .
