the unexpected
two days ago i visited a cove i had not seen in a while. ice filled the inlet from the shore to the island. a perfect blip. i published a detail of yellow buoy frozen in the ice 3.10.15 and tucked the broad view away for another day.
yesterday i returned to the cove. the fog was lovely, but the tide was low. the island stood high above the dark rocks covered with broken ice. i realized it needed to be higher tide for this photo.
today was not a day for leisurely blipping. too much was happening trying to get out of town tomorrow. but i had a plan. it was sunny. high tide was mid afternoon. the cove would be beautiful. i knew the shot. i drove down to find that my shot was no longer there. what? the ice had gone out. overnight. instead, the cove was bright and blue. it could have been a summer day except for the bracing wind and the snow still lingering on the shoreline. thinking i might have been confused, i searched for the icebound yellow mooring i had blipped two days before. there it was bobbing cheerfully in plenty of free water halfway between the island and the right shore.
i was disappointed. i had wanted this icebound harbor scene to add to my winter 2015 shots. but when the ice goes out in not my call to make. today was about seeing a picture bigger than my own.
