Bumble Bee's pollen sac
Bees and butterflies abounded today, as the day warmed to 28C, on what may very well be our last day of summer-like temperatures in Christchurch.
I was fascinated to see Mrs Bumble Bee and her pollen sac, so did a little reading. It seems that her middle legs are equipped with comb-like hairs that run over her body, scraping off collected pollen and transferring it to her hind legs. The pollen is held in a sac while she flies from place to place, or home, to stock her nest for her offspring when they hatch.
Clever Mrs BB!
