Neptune's Fountain
At Place de la République in Arles, there ls a Roman Obelisk standing in the middle of the square. It used to belong to the Roman Circus that has now disappeared. This bronze medallion represents Neptune. There are four identical fountains at the base of the obelisk.
The lion stands as an effigy of the town as it was once conferred by the Republic of Venice to the City of Arles as a sign of fidelity. Provence was once part of the Italian confederation.
