The Canadian Border
This is a picture of a monument that is between customs on the U.S./Canadian border. We go to Canada every year on vacation so we see this stone every year. However, we never really looked into what the stone said until this past year that we went. It is a marker that signifies the “Unfortified Boundary Line between The Dominion of Canada and the United States of America.” It was pretty cool to see because it was placed by the Kiwanis Club of Watertown in New York and the Kiwanis Club of Kingston which is in Ontario. I also like the last line of the main plaque which states that the unity between Canada and the United States is “A lesson of peace to all nations.” When I read this I really got to thinking. Other countries around the world have had wars with their neighbors throughout history. However, when you look at Canada and the U.S. there has been little to no conflict. Both countries during the 19th century had defense systems in place against the other just in case. However, we have become strong allies throughout peace and war. Many Americans do not know that we get a lot of things from Canada. For example, Swedish Fish are actually made in Canada, as is Hall’s Cough Drops. Even the Chevy Silverado that my family owns was built and assembled in Canada.
