The Tivoli Presents... Fire Damage.
This is the remains of the fire at the old Tivoli cinema, that caused so much disruption on the roads, showing the back of the building from the river Cam footpath. Hopefully the Art Deco front will be saved but the building is unsafe at the moments as the roof caved in. It is now owned by Wetherspoons and recently I was having a meal there in the river restaurant with my family. The Tivoli cinema opened in 1925 when Chaplin's 'Gold Rush' was released . Although it was still the era of silent movies, going to the pictures was highly popular.Talkies were first shown here in 1929..In 1939 the cinema was hit by a German incendiary bomb. As it is situated by the river Cam, it was subject to flooding and those patrons sitting in the front stalls occasionally had water lapping round their ankles !
