Radio Controlled Yachting
There’s a new force afoot at the Royal Southampton Yacht Club these days — regular sailors who get as much fun from racing model yachts as they do the full sized versions.
It’s all down to a growing influence within the club of members who participate in an alternative sailing sport.
The model yachts are radio controlled and members’ skill is tested in controlling the yachts in much the same way as though they were on the water itself.
An important milestone in the RC section's development has been the adoption of an affordable and easily transported DF65 'Dragon Force' class as a starter yacht. In itself a very new RC Class with recognition at national and international level it has become popular worldwide.
Royal Southampton members sail their Dragon Force model yachts at Lakeside, Eastleigh twice a month, and at the Clubhouse on the Beaulieu River.
This particular yacht is on display permanently at the Ocean Village Clubhouse iconic of a growing sport among regular sailors.
