It turned out that light cloud cover was an asset in viewing the eclipse.
We joined the throngs on the Chevin at Surprise View. It grew a bit dim, the geese in a neighbouring field were a bit restless, and then it passed. This image will have been at near maximum. In '99 we viewed from Newcastle Town Moor, and our memory suggests it grew darker then.
I spent the rest of the day in Wetherby, which on another day would have offered many a blip. But I expect I'll be in Wetherby again, and we'll have a very long wait for an eclipse like this one.
