Gently down the stream

Central Winchester

Today when I went shopping for the weekend I also decided to climb St Giles Hill and blip as much of the city as poss.  Down below (centre foreground) is the 1902 Hamo Thorneycroft statue of King Alfred and a little further up on the left of the Broadway is the Victorian guildhall with its clock tower.  Past that, still going up, the Broadway becomes the much narrower High Street, now pedestrianised and filled with market stalls on Saturday.  (If you're really careful/eagle eyed you can follow it all the way up to the ancient Westgate with the 2 little people under it).

What else?  Well the Cathedral is just out of shot on the left, together with the remains of Winchester Castle, the Bishop's Palace and the wonderful old buildings of Winchester College (one of the most expensive boys' schools in the country).  Top rightish in this shot are the big Hampshire County Council offices with their smaller clock tower and the ugly block on the skyline is the much disliked (including by themselves, apparently) County Police Headquarters.

There - now you know more about Winchester than you probably ever wanted too!

Happy Saturday evening, folks  xx
