Thank you @JerseyOAC #Zanzibar
IMPACT is delighted to announce the launch of Zanzibar's first Paediatric Hearing Screening Programme, which has been made possible thanks to the support and generosity of the people of Jersey.
This time last year, Dr Naufal Kassim, the Islands’ only Consultant ENT Surgeon and founder of IMPACT Zanzibar, described the lack of neonatal hearing screening programme as the most pressing ENT problem currently facing the country: ‘We are missing a real opportunity for early intervention.’
Now, thanks to a generous grant from the Jersey Overseas Aid Commssion, local healthworkers at Mnazi Mmoji Hospital have been gifted the equipment and training to screen all babies born at high-risk of hearing impairment.
Early diagnosis and treatment gives babies with disabling levels of hearing loss the best possible opportunity of acquiring speech and language skills, as well as reaching other developmental milestones. This investment in specialist training for local staff places IMPACT Zanzibar in an excellent position to expand the screening programme to all babies born in Zanzibar over the coming years - a vital component of early childhood care in most developed countries.
Thank you JOAC!
