Aiken Gopher Tortoise Heritage Preserve

We decided to visit the preserve today! It is about 25 miles from home and we had never been there. The trails were not well marked so of course we took the wrong path. Our hike turned into an 8 mile trip through pretty uninteresting scrub land. Much longer than we had planned! Hardly any wildlife - a couple birds, lots of fire ants, 1 tortoise hole, no tortoise. There were some interesting wild flowers though. After 4 hours, hot sun and a rain storm we finally made it back to the car. Don't think we will visit again.
