C17th broken pottery found in a derelict sewer

Greyfriars Drain, Lewins Mead, Bristol
The open sewer of a mediaeval Franciscan Friary which stood on the site of Lewins Mead was discovered during re-developments in 1973.  Bristol Museum archaeologists found that it had been filled with rubbish from c. 1650 onwards when it was no longer needed.  The debris included masses of contemporary pottery, clay pipes, glass and bones.  Local pottery was found alongside wares from Devon, Somerset, Hampshire and Dorset which might have been sold in Bristol on market days.
