Abandoned

Unfortunately there are so many abandoned and derelict farming cottages scattered around Scotland.

The class struggle that was faced by the crofters is still a touchy subject. In the 18th century, large landowners figured out that livestock was more profitable than the small tenant farms, and initiated the notorious Highland Clearances – using everything from tactics like raising the rent to recruiting armed police officers to force families out of their homes. Confrontations were common and they were ugly, and it wasn’t unheard of for the British military to be called in to put an end to the uprisings.
