Fishing

It was lovely in the Park this morning.  We went for a longish hike with Mish, and she was good.  We just have to remember she really is very small and doesn't have great endurance.  But she's fine if we can rest every so often.

This was taken at the Railway dam.  It was constructed in 1883, and provided water for the steam trains and railway houses at Blackwood Station until 1936.

By 1908 six trains traveled daily to the Park from Adelaide.  On Wednesdays, Saturdays and public holidays up to 8 trains serviced the Park daily.

The body of William Saunders, the first curator of the National Park, was discovered drowned in the dam in December 1912.  The circumstances of his drowning remain a mystery. In 1959, when steam trains were replaced, the National Park Commissioners sought to purchase the dam from the Railways.  Three acres of land, including the dam, were dedicated as part of the National Park on 18 March 1965.
