Today we headed over first thing to take a look at the Viking settlement we missed yesterday. It was worth the trip, its surprising how much of the walls have survived for so long - you can get a really good sense of the place.
Then we went to Broch of Gurness where we saw a Pictish farm and a Nordic settlement. You could still walk through the entrance to the main building and walk around inside. The stone furniture was still there as was the hearth in the centre. It is hard to believe how old it really was!
Then after stopping for lunch we headed out again and came across a tomb in the hillside, which you had to crawl through a tunnel to enter. Having discovered that the torch provided at the entrance had no working battery, and the fact the tomb was pitch black, we decided not to venture any further. Headed to Kirkwall to get some supplies, and then this evening ventured out onto the beach to search for some shells.
