A Fond Farewell

We have two Japanese maple trees in the front yard/garden, which give us much pleasure year-round, but are particularly interesting in the spring, when their delicate new leaves emerge.

This will be the last spring we enjoy seeing that happen on this tree, which we've had for eight years, as it has to be removed so a contractor can repair a water leak into our basement. We don't have space anywhere else on our small property, front or back, to replant the tree, so we've let our immediate neighbors know that it's looking for a new home.

There's no guarantee that it would survive being dug up and moved, but one family is interested in trying that, and I'm cautiously optimistic that our tree will find a new home with them.

For now, I'm relishing each new day's changes in this tree even more as spring progresses and the day of its departure grows closer.

(Here's an earlier detail of the same tree.)
