Roman?
Last weekend we found this piece of glass glinting in the sun at the edge of a newly planted field. I think that this is probably part of one of the many Roman artifacts found in and around Cirencester which was the second largest Roman town in Britain after London. Whenever any new development is planned the archaeologists have to investigate the site and recently over 40 burials and 4 cremations were discovered when a garage was being demolished at a site where more burials and cremations had previously been unearthed. People living in the town sometimes find Roman objects in their garden and there is evidence of many Roman villas in the surrounding countryside so I wonder if this glass comes from one site.
From its dimensions it would appear to come from a vase or amphora and in certain lights has a beautiful patina with its blue and purple iridescence and a hint of yellow impurities. When viewed in large, tiny air bubbles and scratch marks can be seen. Maybe these were made by a plough. Unfortunately we had no time to investigate further or to visit the nearby excellent Corinium Museum.
(Thanks for your wishes. I am feeling much better and will resume looking at your blips tomorrow)
