Natural History Mystery.

If you have intellectual curiosity read on. If you are very Squeamish you might not want to know.

This snail has crawled up the outside of a window. The photograph was taken from inside the room looking in at the remains of the snail.

What is going on here? Our guess is that a parasitic fly has laid eggs in the snail which may have been already dead. Whether the fly was able to bore the hole through the shell to do this is not known.
The eggs hatched and the grubs ate the snail. Some remains of the snail can be seen on the right. The grubs the pupated and produced new flies which can be seen on the picture.

This is still guesswork. The Knottman Research Division (i.e. Mrs. K.) is beavering away in Google attempting to identify the type of fly this might be. At the moment we think it may be one of the 100 species in the Psychodidae family. These may be called moth flies or owl midges.

If we find any more precise answer I will include it in my blip tomorrow.
