Caught the wave

After Thursday and Friday as the Crisis doctor, then Friday night and the whole weekend as the on call (i.e. crisis) doctor, I was again the crisis doctor today. There were no crises so not a lot to do except liaise with the nursing staff. Came back to this rather grandiose accommodation, and went for a run, north along the Coastal Walkway.

I hadn't gone very far (perhaps a kilometre) when I saw the photo possibilities being provided by a kite boarder in the surf. It appears that the surfing contest is in recess until the coming weekend, and this chap were enjoying himself.

Abruptly he was joined by another. I was close enough to see the short board he used, and the way he got started. He put his feet in stirrup things and then sat in the shallows. As the strings to his kite went taut, he jumped upwards and was quickly zooming out to sea. Very impressive and so effortless.

On his way out he jumped the first waves. As he went up the face of the third or fourth wave he met, he used the kite to lift him up, and did a somersault. My photo of it shows him part way through the somersault, and the kite nowhere to be seen. Even so, he is too small to easily see that he is upside down.

Later he came racing back to shore, and judging it to perfection caught this wave and rode it into the shallows. Here, he has just started the ride.

Near me were a number of surfing types and they spoke approvingly of his style and skill.

I carried on with my run, and enjoyed the sun after two days of mainly rain.
