Lichen or moss?

I always heard that a forest where moss drips from the trees is one in which the air is really pure. Today we were in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness of the Wenatchee National Forest. I really don't know my moss very well... this is not the deep emerald green one sees in the wet side of the Cascades. Is a lichen a moss? Maybe this is the Methuselah's Beard lichen?
