A Little Bit of History !
Went to for a stroll around Hampden tonight.
The Olympic banners are in place in the streets around the stadium.........but No Saltire ( which is odd, as it is normally in place 365 ???).
Any way, then I remembered Lesser Hampden, where I spent many a happy time, as my Dad was a supporter of "Jolly Old Queen's" all his days, and I was always in tow.
Will always have a soft spot for Queen's Park, a club steeped in history, still fully amateur, and still holding their own in Scottish football. The club still holds true to it's motto -"Ludere causa Ludendi"............To Play for the sake of Playing.
Lesser has it's own history behind it :
"In 1923, Queen's Park were looking for a venue for their other teams other than the main stadium. The club purchased a farm to the west of Hampden Park and built a pitch and stands.
When it opened in 1924, Lesser Hampden had a capacity of 12,000. To save money, the original farmhouse was retained and was converted into a pavilion and dressing room, still in use today. This farmhouse, which dates back to the 19th century is believed by many football historians to be the oldest football building in the world.
During World War II, Lesser Hampden was commandeered by the British Government to serve as a base for the Home Guard. The ground was returned to the football club at the end of the war in 1945. There had been proposals to convert the site back to agriculture if there were food shortages."
