Today was a shopping day with my daughter, great fun. We visited Exeter and several hours later on this rather grey day I took this shot which shows St Catherine's Chapel Ruins and the Almshouses in the foreground woth Exeter Cathedral in the background.
I do rather like the way Exeter has developed with glimpses of the old castle walls and anchient buildings being preserved amongst the new buildings.
The Almshouses were founded in 1457 by Canon John Stevens, for the purpose of housing thirteen poor men. Later on the Chapel became a carpenter's shop and the almshouses were divided into two, to provide accommodation for elderly women. It was bombed during WW2 in the Exeter Blitz on May 1942. It was subsequently decided that the ruins should be kept as a remembrance.
