Day 3 - Are you listening?
We set off this morning for our next destination, Berlin. It's a favourite city of ours, and always great to visit. But, of course, a few stops en route...
First, the stately town of Potsdam - to visit the Sanssouci Palace, the former summer palace of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The gardens were amazing and extensive - we clocked up a good few miles walking around.
Next we went on a mission to find Checkpoint Bravo - the next in the series following on from yesterday's blip. Checkpoint Bravo was the crossing point from East Germany into West Berlin (and therefore back to this strange little pocket of West Germany). There's only a small part of this left, unlike Checkpoint Alpha yesterday - and it took us a while to find it. Once we did though, it was interesting to see the former East German control tower, then just a little way up the motorway the (now disused) West German service station, all done up in bright colours. More exploring to be done here another day...
Our final stop was a guided walk around Teufelsberg - a former US listening station up high on a hill just to the outskirts of West Berlin. Abandoned after the reunification, this site has since become one of Germany's largest Street Art collections. With a slightly odd feel to it all as you walk round, you are able to get up high to see the "golf balls" up close. They're mainly still in pretty good condition - but it makes you wonder for how long that will be the case. There was also a panoramic view across Berlin from up there - just beautiful.
On to the hotel in Potsdamer Platz, Berlin - where I discovered we are staying 2 nights! Now to find out what tomorrow holds in store...
