Martello tower number 3
I promised you a Martello tower and here it is. There were 103 of these towers built in Britain between 1805 and 1808 with 74 being in the south-east. Another of those times when the tourist board weren't at the top of their game and we were trying to deter those pesky French from coming over. This one sits atop a hill to the east of Folkestone, above the harbour, and is within an easy walk of numbers 1 and 2. The bit on top is a WWII addition, a machine gun emplacement, and the original armament would have been a cannon.
Lovely lazy day. Got up late and decided to head to Dungeness for a cup of tea. Went there the fast route which includes bimbling along the motorway with Steely Dan on the CD player, and from Dungeness along the coast through Dymchurch and Hythe to stop on Wear Bay Road to look out over the sea. I waved to Veronica because I could see France and that's where she lives. Then back home and off the motorway at Ashford to come through Biddenden and on to Staplehurst. Early night so this blip is later than usual.
Today is shaping up to be a lazy day too; I'll be enjoying hax'n and a beer later but between now and then there may be some sofa snoozling.
