Woodpecker Again
Today’s photo was the greater spotted woodpecker at the feeder. It did a fairly good job of hiding, sitting directly behind the poles as it ate, and only appearing as it snatched another sunflower seed.
Having grabbed the seed it placed it in the rope and then pecked to open up the case and ate the seed. Then repeat process…
I blipped it earlier this year, in company with other birds.
Spring seems to have arrives even if it is still fairly chilly. Standing under trees you hear competetive bird singing in full action. Swans have appeared on bits of open water and Geese are either competing with the swans or joyfully eating whatever it is they find on those soggy, just-thawed-out fields. We saw a blackbird and two curlews today and the magpies are picking up twigs to add another storey to their nest, or to build a new one in the next tree.
When people think “spring” they nearly all seem to think warm days, blue skies, and spring flowers but in reality spring is a tough cold time, backing and forthing between winter that won’t quite give up and those warmer days we all hope for.
