Gillipaw's Journal

Kilnave, Islay

A beautiful day, we drove up to Loch Gruinart. Spent some time at the RSPB hides. Loads of barnacle geese, lapwings darting about, redshank, shelduck, rooks, several pheasants and a heron. We drove on to Ardnave Point in search of chough, as we've never seen one, but no luck.   We also experienced a classic traffic jam - about 30 sheep in the road staring us out.

On our return down the track we stopped at Kilnave. 750AD cross, the chapel is 12th century.  I liked the strong shadow of the cross. What a peaceful location, overlooking the loch. We found a beautiful Easter display in the chapel, in a little egg box.  Twigs formed to make a wooden cross, with a shell supporting it, surrounded by bluebells. Very special.
