Bergenia - a hardy perennial
Bergenia purpurascens is a great evergreen perennial with very large oval, green leaves that turn beetroot-red in winter, that give the plant its nickname - 'elephant ears'. They produce slender reddish stems that bear drooping sprays of magenta pink flowers in spring. They are so robust and add this wonderful colour to the shadiest spots. This cluster is growing beside a leylandii hedge and hardly ever sees the sun. This makes it late spring flowering usually.
