Smeaton`s Ornamental.
John Smeaton`s Ornamental Bridge over the river Avon at Amesbury. Built in 1777 for the Duke of Queensbury, who wanted a back entrance over the river to his Abbey, so he did not have to see the great unwashed in the town when he came in on his horse and cart the front way. Smeaton, a Yorkshireman to his fingertips, stayed in Salisbury during the work, riding out on a horse the seven miles to the construction. In the final bill to Old Q, he charged his Lordship 10s 6d for the hire of the horse.
John Smeaton also designed Ramsgate and Banff harbours , the Perth Bridge and Charlestown harbour,Cornwall,(now used in Poldark), plus dozens more around the country. He has gone down in the books as "The Father of Civil Engineering".
