Broad Bodied Chaser
Rather than describing this as an insecty thing - as previously when I posted an insect, I have taken time to research this huge dragony fly that dive bombed me this morning.
It is a female Broad Bodied Chaser (Libellula depressa ) the male is blue in colour.
Apparently they are common throughout the south of England, although I don't think I've seen one before. The live by ponds, so this one must have been a long way from where it emerged, as the nearest water is a good half mile away.
Thank you Libellula depressa for alighting on a last years' hogweed stem.
View large to see a bit of spider's web caught on its left wing tip.
P.S. As featured on Springwatch this evening!
