Modernising a listed building...
This is the back of Eastgate house which was built in 1590-91.
It has been slowly deteriorating inside for years so Medway council bought it and managed to get £1.28 million in funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to transform the house into an exhibition centre for art and history events, with improved access and visitor facilities. The improved access being this bit here - the building of a lift onto the outside of the building because it can't possibly go inside with the narrow stairs and small rooms. I am interested to see what the finished job will look like.
The building to the right is Dickens' Swiss chalet - taken from the grounds of his home, Gad's Hill out in Higham. It is suffering from a lot of rot in this soggy climate so there are various fund raisers to repair it but it currently is fragile and unsafe for tourists.
Overcast this morning for my tootle to the High Street (when I took this) but lovely and sunny later so I got Alex's bed linen recycled outdoors too!
