Kissing Gate
We must pass alone,
The way both open and barred,
But turning, embrace.

This type of gate is called a 'kissing gate', there is some dispute about the reason.
The most prosaic reason is that when you move the gate to go through it "kisses" either one side of the angled fence or the other.
A more poetic reason is that as only one person can pass through at a time, when a gentleman and a lady are out walking, the gentleman would allow the lady to pass through first. She would, on emerging the other side, have to close the gate towards her companion. She could then extract a kiss from him as a toll for coming through the gate ..... much symbolism here of course ....
Choose your own definition, but I know which I prefer ...
