Gedling Miners' memorial
I have portrayed at least one other community memorial dedicated to local miners.
This one is at Gedling Cross - the crossroads that marked a meeting place for local people in the past.
You will see that the memorial is a representation of a Davy safety lantern, used underground.
The memorial is dedicated to the 128 miners who were killed at work in the lifetime of the mine (1899 - 1991) - an average exceeding one per annum, though not accounting for all those who were maimed or injured or who were disabled by dust (pneumoconiosis) and died prematurely.
Such memorials are widespread throughout the old coalfields.
Gedling village lies north of the Trent and east of Nottingham.
