HD and Uncle Dave built a brick and concrete pavers patio off the basement unit. As the concrete path changes elevations quite a lot at that spot, the happy landscapers had to use all the proper toys for shooting spot elevations to assure that the new area will seamlessly match up with the existing. The layer of gravel and sand (as well as the edging)assures that the patio's slopes remain consistent. The pipe (one of 2) and the wood plank you see here were used to assure that the subgrade materials were spread consistently, so that the finished surface is even.
