Life on the River

An early evening scene looking towards the river mouth as the sun begins to set behind me. Coolness fills the air, people are out for their last walk or jog, gulls call and shags gather upon the rocks, the cooking smells from nearby restuarants drift by, mingling with the sea air, all is calm as lights flicker on and darkness descends as the river quietly flows by.

Most of Whakatanes activities are based in, on and around the Pacific Ocean and Whakatane river. Locals and vistors use the Whakatane river for a number of recreational uses including white-baiting, fishing, boating, swimming and waka ama (outrigger canoe) events.

The endangered NZ dotterel, fernbird, banded rail, hawks and grey ducks have made their home on the wetland environment on the eastern side of the river.

In the early hours of most mornings the Whakatane Rowing Club are in full training mode, moving swiftly through the calm water. In the weekends, youngsters are learning the art of yatching, while others enjoy a little kayaking.

A lovely way to end my day.
