Yummy!
I found this jar in a bag on our back door handle when we got back from having lunch out today. It contains one of my favourite sweets.; Pontefract cakes!
When I was a little girl I sometimes got a penny to spend. There was a sweet shop down the road (Bishop Street) belonging to Mrs MacGie, She had a farthing tray a halfpenny tray and a penny tray. You gazed at the trays and picked out what you wanted. I always picked a liquorice of some kind. My Dad liked the pipes but I thought the longer ones like the wheel or laces must be better value..
Children today don't get this pleasure of going to the sweet shop by themselves. There were very few cars on Bute then and everyone knew everyone.
You wouldn't get much for a penny now considering 5p today was worth 12 pennies then.
