Fiona's Panthers memento
Fiona's bench.
This icon came from the old Nottingham Ice Stadium, which was first built in 1939, and was demolished in 2000 to make way for the new National Ice Centre.
At the final Nottingham Panthers game before the old stadium closed, fans were invited to bring tools so that they could take away virtually whatever they wished to keep as mementos. This is the bench on which Fiona had sat since 1980 as a devoted Panthers supporter, and which she spirited away with the assistance of brother-in-law Barry. (Barry and Moira got one also).
The bench was at one time fixed to the rear garage wall, then onto the north facing wall on the new decking about 5 years ago. Being permanently in the shade and north-facing the bench was more of a memento than well-used garden furniture, but more recently with our extension of the decking round onto the West facing wall we have moved it again - to a place in the sun!
This was a tricky job, which entailed having a new welded bracket fixed, to make a strong and secure fixing to the wall, and then the feet drilled and bolted down to the decking to eliminate a tendency to slip and move when the seat was rotated up and down!
Complex? Yes!! And at a cost of one burnt-out Bosch drill which could not cope with drilling two 8mm holes through each of the cast-iron feet.
Today was quite a drama, requiring two visits to B&Q and some expense, and substantial furrowing of brows and one or two expletives!
Anyway, job finished.
Bench looks great.
It shall be used!..........and shall not be moved again!!
I sweated enough blood and tears this time!
