Lochnell Mine

Drove home via Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest village.  The road up through the hills was spectacular and the village itself is pretty.  It was absolutely freezing though.  We got snowed on!  In the past the village was a centre for mining, particularly tin mining.  It's possible to go on a guided tour down Lochnell Mine, and if you're passing nearby it's well worth the effort.

This photo was taken inside the mine.  Despite the fact that the only light is artificial, and even that is only on when there's somebody actually inside the mine, the lichen is thriving.
