Above And Beyond...

The Abandoned Soldier

After the wife returned home about mid-day having had her nails 'shellaced', and driven about 35 milesfor the pleasure there-of, we set off to cycle into the centre of Cardiff.

On entering the city centre, we chained up the bikes and went for refreshments in the Castle cafe, where I grabbed the Blip photo (details below)

There was a blue cross sale in House Of Fraser and we ended up buying a king size quilt (reduced from £260 to £79), sheets, and pillows. The wife also bought daffodils in the market. Cycling home was comical and something like the Beverley Hillibillies (remember that programme?)

Anway, for those interested on the background of the picture.......

The Abandoned Soldier is a resin sculpture created in 2007 by sculptor James Napier that was modelled after British ex-soldier Lance Corporal Daniel Twiddy. The sculpture was made for the BBC documentary Power to the People that was hosted by Tim Samuels.

The statue has been moved about various places, and even done a tour of Wales, but in July 2014 he returned to his main 'base' at Cardiff Castle and will stand as a lasting reminder of the trauma of War, until 2018.

The statue was created in remembrance of soldiers who have suffered the after effects of armed conflict since World War 1 and are not being treated like the heroes they truly are.
