After Memorial Day

When I was growing up there was a rule that you couldn't wear white shoes til after Memorial Day. Does that make any sense? The owner of these shoes can't wear them at all any more, which is probably just as well since they look terribly uncomfortable. We also had "summer clothes" and "winter clothes" and lots of shuffling around in the closets to mark each season. What I remember is that it didn't have anything to do with the temperature or comfort, but with a prescribed date, before or after which you were found wanting.
