Carfax
This week is turning into a bit of a tourist guide to Oxford. After a view from the Sheldonian Cupola, the University Church, a sunset over the Isis, and the Headington Shark, here is a detail from Carfax Tower, the centre of Oxford, and more or less across the road from where I work, so as with the Headington Shark, I apologise for not featuring it sooner! One of these days I will go up it to see the view. Apparently it is 74 metres tall, and nothing can be built in central Oxford taller than Carfax tower. Wikipedia tells me that it is technically St Martin's Tower, but they demolished the church in 1896 to make way for more road traffic. Not something they'd do these days, Oxford city centre is positively allergic to road traffic. I did laugh on Saturday overhearing a conversation between an American couple in the Sheldonian Cupola. They were saying that the city really shouldn't let any cars onto Broad Street (one of the few places in Oxford city centre where you can drive) as it spoils the view, which I thought a rather entertaining opinion from Americans who are notoriously car dependent. The city motto means 'The Truth is Strong'. Carfax derives from the Latin and French words for crossroads.
Lots of photography for work today and tomorrow, lots of fun!
