Sweetheart Abbey, New Abbey, By Dumfries

This former Cistercian Monastery, built in local red sandstone, was founded in 1275 by Lady Dervorguilla in memory of her deceased husband, John de Balliol. After her death, his embalmed heart was buried alongside her, prompting the monks to rename the Abbey in her memory. It is set in the glorious setting of a rich agricultural landscape.
