Candlelit

Last night hundreds of people in Glasgow attended a candlelit vigil for the young Irish student, Karen Buckley who was murdered last week.

The 24-year-old Glasgow Caledonian University student went missing last weekend following a night out in the city's west end. Her parents and two of her three brothers, friends and fellow students were among about 300 mourners at the vigil.

A piper played as mourners laid flowers and others sang Scottish and Irish songs before a minute's silence was held. Cards and messages were also left.

A separate event, entitled Silent Vigil For Our Neighbour Karen Buckley, is to take place today in the Garnethill area of the city, where Karen lived.

A special prayer service was held near her home in Mallow on Wednesday, and a fundraising page set up by Miss Buckley's former classmates to support her family has raised more than £50,000.

A 21-year-old man has appeared in court in connection with her death.

The whole community is deeply saddened by the news of the loss of Karen, an Occupational Therapy student who joined the University in January. Karen’s lecturers describe her as a lovely young woman, who was conscientious and a good team player, popular with her peers, and looking forward to a successful career in occupational therapy.

So sad that a young life can be cut short in this way.
