Shimmering Sun

This was taken earlier this morning when the Sun was relatively low in the sky but had been up a while. If you look at the Sun's limb you can see how distorted it is because of the Earth's atmospheric turbulence. Astronomers talk about the level of movement in the atmosphere like this as 'seeing'. If the seeing is good then the atmosphere is calm and more detail can be seen or photographed through a telescope - or camera.
