Newbattle Abbey

Took a walk through Lord Ancrum's Wood and the grounds of Newbattle Abbey College today; somewhere I hadn't been in more than 25 or 30 years. I learned that the Abbey had been gifted to 'the Scottish nation' in 1937 by Phillip Kerr the 11th Marquis of Lothian (cheers Phil!) - I am now left wondering why I felt decidedly unwelcome anytime I walked through the grounds in the 1980s.
